Tech:NYC’s Statement on the 2025 State of the State Address

January 14, 2025

Tech:NYC issued the following statement in response to today’s 2025 State of the State address by Governor Kathy Hochul:

Tech:NYC applauds Gov. Hochul’s efforts to make New York more affordable, liveable, and safe, which will help our state attract and retain the top tech talent in the world. We are also encouraged that the Governor understands that New York must solidify its position as a leader in AI, especially as the speed of innovation and adoption of the technology continues to increase.

To that end, 2025 is a critical year to build on the momentum that began with Empire AI, a bold initiative that Gov. Hochul championed in 2024 to put the power of AI in the hands of New York research institutions, ensuring that the future of responsible AI research and development runs through New York State. We also support the Governor’s proposals to ensure all New Yorkers have access to educational opportunities and training to meet the jobs of the 21st century.

We must ensure that bold, innovative policies like these — which push our state forward — are the rule, not the exception, in New York. At the same time, we need New York State to implement a balanced regulatory approach around AI that keeps up with the swift pace of innovation and adaptation, and we are eager to work with the Governor and the Legislature on a sensible approach to achieving these goals.

Finally, Tech:NYC looks forward to collaborating with the Governor to realize her commitment to put forward a proposal to address the challenges of cell phones in schools. We have previously called for a ban on phones in schools as a nimble, legal, and achievable solution to help our kids' mental health and boost education.
