Companies to Watch:
How Mavity is Accelerating
NYC's Comeback
What does your company do?
Mavity co-founder and CEO Tomás Uribe: Mavity is the end-to-end collaboration tool and payouts platform for creative teams. We help small agencies and startups find and work with creative teams to help them execute design and audiovisual projects.
A question we love to ask every founder: why New York?
TU: New York is the epitome of entrepreneurship and resilience. The first time I came here in 2000, I made the decision to live here one day. Fast forward nine years, and we have built an amazing business. My son was born here, and I continue to admire every single corner of this place.
Have you found that so-called “Great Resignation” has led more workers to ditch traditional job hunting and become freelancers — the type of people who might want to offer services on your platform?
TU: Absolutely. People now have the confidence to switch jobs easily, knowing that they can capture, curate, and convert their skills into sustainable jobs. The last decade was defined by the gig economy or the ability to have a side hustle or passive income. We believe this decade will be defined by the passion economy: people that love what they do — and can do it full-time.
What sets Mavity apart from other collaboration or project management tools?
TU: We grab the best features from productivity and collaboration tools as well as the best functionalities of existing labor marketplaces. Project management tools work great for teams that you already know, ‘in house’ teams. But how do you collaborate effectively with people you don’t know? We’ve built a product with intentionality around effective collaboration in order to avoid team procrastination and task dependency.
What’s an idea or piece of advice you got during the NYC Recovery Challenge program you’re most excited to implement?
TU: Our main improvement will come in a new team builder feature we’re building. There’s a complexity to creative projects that have a thin line between the subjective and objective. For this, we need to ensure that the quality of the project will be directly proportional to the makeup of the team we provide to clients.
What’s one top growth goal you hope to achieve by the end of 2022?
TU: We are looking to grow to 20,000 creatives and provide teams for startups and agencies at scale.
Okay, three rapid fire questions. First: what’s your favorite pizza slice?
TU: Artichoke, hands down.
What’s the best place in New York for a coffee or lunch meeting (remember in-person meetings)?
TU: Oh, Devoción! Best Colombian coffee around!
What’s your favorite remote work or productivity hack?
TU: Beyond the tools you can use, I think automation is key for anything (think Bardeen, Airtable, Zapier), and also being intentional in the way you communicate with your team is key. Always respond to any message, over-communicate, and ensure the message is clear.
