Tech:NYC’s Statement on the Signing of the “SAFE for Kids Act”

Tech:NYC President & CEO Julie Samuels released this statement on the signing of the “SAFE for Kids Act” and the “New York Child Data Protection Act”

Lawmakers clearly have good intentions with these bills, but some significant unresolved issues — including how age verification will work, which websites will be impacted, and whether algorithms used to filter out harmful content will be banned — could prevent them from being fulfilled. It’s even more concerning that these issues will be addressed in a rulemaking process that has repeatedly failed to achieve lawmakers’ intended goals. We’ll continue to engage with the Attorney General’s office through this process, the same as we’ve worked with lawmakers on these bills since they were introduced.
