July Newsletter: The tech that helps NYC function

This is the July 2019 edition of the Tech:NYC newsletter. If you're not already getting this in your inbox, sign up now.

This summer, we’ve been talking to people across NYC’s tech industry, new and veteran alike, and one question keeps coming up over and over again: how can we get more involved?

New York’s unique nature lends itself to an integrated and collaborative city, where all types of industries — and people who work in those industries — constantly intersect. The same is, of course, true with local government and civic institutions, too. In an effort to celebrate and foster that, we’re kicking off a series of monthly events we’re calling Functions.NYC: a new opportunity for our colleagues to spend time with the experts who really know what it takes to make a place like NYC function — and to be a bigger part of it.

Technology, and the people who build it, has so much to offer the conversations happening citywide on everything from transit to housing to public education, and more. And the technology sector also has plenty to learn from those same conversations. If you’re interested in being involved — by participating in a session or hosting a session at your company — subscribe to get invitations and updates here, or just reply to this email, and we look forward to hearing your ideas on how we can better support the city we all love.

WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO

Our leaders had lunch with Cecile Richards, co-founder of Supermajority. Her new organization is uniting a network of women to turbocharge progress in our country, and we’re looking forward to supporting her efforts on gender equity.

Our own Julie Samuels joined NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer — along with Rep. Adriano Espaillat, State Senator Jessica Ramos, and other community leaders — to call for more resources in preparation for the 2020 census, which will largely be conducted online for the first time. Read the Comptroller’s report about what’s needed here.

Executives and investors gathered for lunch with Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo. A former VC, she shared her ideas for scaling opportunity and achieving growth in the Ocean State through expanded access to educational opportunities and upwardly mobile jobs.
